The
Centre for Human Reproductive Science (ChRS) integrates infertility
expertise from its research collaborations worldwide with the Fertility
Services and Assisted Conception Unit at the Women’s Hospital to deliver the
latest in treatment and diagnosis to patients alongside facilitating further
advances in the understanding of all scientific and social issues related to
Fertility.
We are the core of
one of the international premier research groupings studying fertilisation.
Notable achievements include a primary role, with one of our main
collaborators, Professor Chris Barratt, in developing the male part of the
home fertility test Fertell.
Our research laboratories are based within the University of Birmingham
which is one of the premier research universities in Europe. The research is
multi-disciplinary and we have many active national as well as international
collaborations.
We are particularly interested in identifying and characterising at the
molecular level those events that occur during the development of sperm and
during their initial interactions with the egg at fertilization using
molecular biology and protein-based strategies. For example, we are using
proteomic strategies to identify sperm proteins involved in these events. In
addition, we are using sophisticated live imaging techniques. The signalling
events are characterised by an influx of calcium and this is involved in
sperm fertilisation.
The unit is currently also active in recruiting participants for
collaborative research on spermatogenesis (how sperm are made) and also stem
cell research.
We look forward
to your interest or involvement in our ongoing work!
