Embryos may be frozen and stored for a number of reasons.
The most common reason is to preserve spare embryos after IVF. Only good
quality embryos will be frozen, as these have the highest chance of
surviving the freezing and thawing process.
Frozen embryos may be stored for up to 10 years, or in
exceptional circumstances, until the woman reaches the age of 55. It is the
policy of the Unit to store them for up to 5 years in the first instance,
but this may be extended where appropriate. Embryos must by law, be used by
the end of this period, or they will be removed from storage
We will make every effort to contact couples, regarding any
stored embryos.
Clearly, it is ESSENTIAL that couples with stored embryos ensure that the
clinic is notified of any change of address, so that contact can be
maintained.
FAILURE TO DO THIS MAY RESULT IN EMBRYOS BEING REMOVED FROM
STORAGE
